Howdy. I live in the Northwest, and I own 2 Yamahas. They are my first, not bad for me being 30, I guess.. After just getting off Active Duty with the Army, for Sept 11th, I am trying to get my skis running, with my newly found extra time. I have a question that I was hoping someone could give me guidance on. I am having problems with my '92 Waverunner III 650. When I pull the throttle back more than 1/4 of the way, I am getting no power, and almost sounds like the engine just goes blahhhhh. I use new plugs, and the ski runs fine for about 3 or 4 minutes, if that, and then does the same thing again. No real sign of serious fouling. I have set the low and high screw settings to 1 1/8 turn + - 1/4 turn, and blown out the carb with carb cleaner. I have checked all the fuel lines, and everything looks fine. Anyone with ideas, please help if you can, as I don't yet have the money to take it to the shop, and being somewhat mechanically inclined(I rebuilt my Suzuki RM 250 and Superjet 650 myself, don't I feel proud...), I would rather spend the money on parts and upgrades, should I get the chance. BTW, I did a compression check on both cylinders, and was about 130 PSI, each, WOT. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Shawn P.

I know you say you checked fuel lines, but it *really* sounds like a fuel filter....

Well, I am taking any and all ideas into account, so I will try replacing it, as IT was never replaced, and they don't cost too much. Thanks. If any more ideas, please do not hesitate to give them to me. I am pretty good at most of the motor/impeller/hull stuff, but one thing I never really had much experience at is carbs and fuel intake stuff. Do you know of anything I can use thru the fuel system to maybe clean them out. One thing I was wondering about, but really didn't know what the rate of flow would be, is the fuel selector (on/off/reserve). Could there be a possibility of that also being restricted? Just ideas coming off the top of my head. Thanks again for the help. Shawn P.

First, welcome home and thanks for your service to our country. Now, for your problem - you have yamafuzz. There is a very small filtration screen located in the carb that clogs with yamafuzz. It is actual the shedding of the lining of the fuel lines from deterioriation after the primary filter. This is why the small filter is in there. Open it up, clean out the fuzz and I think you'll be back in business. One of the amateur ways of determining fuel delivery problems is to play with the choke. It it will accelerate with the choke on, then it is starving for fuel somewhere in the system. Good luck, it is an easy fix. Otherwise, that motor will run literally forever. We had some in the rental fleet with over 700 hours that never even had a top end rebuild!

Tom, thanks. I did take apart the carb, took some pics too, and could not believe the fuzz in there. Almost looked like the screen had hit puberty!!! I wanted to ask and make sure, I did clean up the whole carb, is the L and High screw settings supposed to be both at 1 1/8 +-1/4 turn? I have them set on that, and after reassembling the carb, the ski is not wanting to start now. I am sure it is something simple. Thanks again for the help, as I was unsettled about pulling the carb apart. I really appreciate the assistance. Shawn P.
It is internal to the carb on the inlet side. You'll need to remove the carb from the machine to access it. Spray cleaner will not work, unfortunately.

You may just need to reprime the carb

Well, thought I would update here. I have done all I can do, and still having the same prob. I think that I primed the carb correctly, and I cleaned out the carb screen. I replaced the fuel lines, and still, having probs with it running ratty. I was going to post a sound bite to a website, and post the link if anyone is interested in hearing it to get a better idea with what I may be running into. I would like to say thanks again for the help, but I may be destined for the shop if I cannot figure this out. I just don't have the money to put into shop charges. Shawn P.
