Does any one know how to remove the bendix from a 550 starter? It appears that it is held in place by a collar that has a tiny internal snap ring - however, I have had no luck removing it. Also, is there a way to lubricate the overunning clutch internals and what type of lubricant is recommended? Mine does not spin smoothly

Thanks in advance.

Pushdown the collar, and with a sharp screwdriver open up the snap ring. It takes a while. you would be better to ask your local automobile starter rebuild guys where they get there gears rebuilt. I had one done for $5 about 7 years ago. It was a small place in NY. all they did was gears. They'll knock off the collar change the springs and put in new bearings, and press on a new collar.
